 A question about playing in a modal style

So after seeing the "Still Ahead" show at the Hollywood Bowl (Which was amazing by the way. Truly one of the more powerful performances I have seen at the bowl.) I got to wondering how a bass player approaches a modal piece. Do you make a specific effort to accent particular notes within the mode on certain beats or are you simply generally stating the mode to provide a lead instrument with a harmonic framework.

I also managed to get to see Inside Straight at Anthology. That band is a lot of fun and is super accessible. I think "Kind of Brown" will certainly make my recommendation list for anyone just getting into jazz.
